CAGE
SmartRack cages are made of injection molded high temperature plastics, including Polysulfone and Ultemp, which can be autoclaved at temperatures up to 133°C.
The cages are fitted with a stainless steel and silicone grommet assembly to take a water bottle sipper tube or automatic watering drinking valve. If required, cages can be fitted with two grommets to accommodate both a water bottle and an automatic watering system. This can be very useful when accustoming naïve animals to automatic watering.
The cage units slide on spring loaded stainless steel supports, which both cushion the cage on insertion and removal and reduce noise. Inserting the cage unit on the supports in the rack gently compresses the cage lid. The supply and exhaust diffusers of the cage lid are squeezed tight against their respective openings in the rack frame to provide an effective seal (though not completely airtight to ensure that the animals survive in the event of a breakdown).
FEEDER
The internal feeder is made of stainless steel wire and is suspended within the cage. It is supported on the cage rim or on purpose-designed, welded buttons in the cage and held in place by the cage lid. The feeder is designed to hold enough food for at least two weeks at normal stocking density.
WATER BOTTLES
Water can be supplied from Polysulphone plastic drinking bottles held in a bracket attached to the cage lid. This bracket also holds the cardholder clip. The water bottles can be easily changed without removing the cage from the rack, to minimize the need to open the cage. Many other bottles will fit the bracket. A slim sipper tube (6-7mm diameter) is recommended, as this is easier to insert through the grommet.
